What do we mean By “Messianic”?

It’s amazing how the use of a word can change over time. For example the word “gay” used to mean happy and care free. Even a whole decade has been classified as the Gay 90’s. However, in modern times gay has come to be associated with the Homosexual community. As a result saying someone is gay in our present time has a completely different intent, than saying someone was gay during the 1890’s.

Unfortunately, the word “Messianic” has also changed from its historical meaning. Historically this word was synonymous with Judaism in that Judaism was and is forever linked with the belief in messiah. Unfortunately the Christian community has wrestled this word away from the Jewish people and has redefined it to mean a number of things that stray far from the historical definition.

We, the members of the Observant Messianic Jewish Rabbinical Association, define the word “Messianic” in its historical & traditional sense. We are not Christians we are Jews. We are not just Jews; we are Torah-observant Jews who cling to the ancient promise of a Jewish messiah. OMJRA members do not subscribe to Christian doctrines or beliefs. Our members do not seek to make converts to Christianity of our fellow Jews. Rather our members seek to promote Torah observance amongst our people and to promote an understanding of Torah amongst the nations.
